I finally bought a proper salon chair for my home studio
After using a cheap office chair for a year, I spent about $800 on a real hydraulic styling chair. My back was killing me after every cut, and I was constantly adjusting the client's height with pillows. The new chair has a smooth pump and swivels perfectly. Has anyone else made a big buy for their setup that was totally worth it?

Hydraulic chairs are the best for that.

Wasn't there some big recall on a bunch of hydraulic chairs a while back? I swear I read something about them failing and dropping people on the floor (which sounds pretty funny, unless it's you). @stone.margaret, you've got me worried about mine now. I guess they're still the easiest way to adjust things, even if the mechanism can be a weak spot. Maybe the trick is just not to buy the cheapest one you can find.

Yeah, that recall was for over a million chairs from a few brands a couple years back. The gas cylinder can wear out or fail, which is the part that actually controls the height. @olivias88, the easiest check is to see if your chair slowly sinks when you sit in it, that's the first sign. If it does, you can order a replacement cylinder online for way less than a new chair. Just make sure to get the right size for your model. Honestly, a lot of office chairs are built to have that part swapped out when it goes.
