Finally tried that foiling technique my client kept raving about

I thought her DIY highlights looked okay but she swore the foil placement was different from what I learned in school 8 years ago. After three rounds of watching her explain it last Saturday, I gave it a shot on a test mannequin and the color lifted way more evenly than my usual method. Has anyone else had to unlearn their original training techniques from clients who found something better online?

My coworker Sarah had the same thing happen two years ago with balayage. She kept insisting the way I did it was outdated and showed me a TikTok from some stylist in LA with 800k followers. I brushed it off until a client complained that her highlights looked stripey compared to her friend's. I tried Sarah's method on a practice head and the color melted way softer, no harsh lines. Now I do it that way for most of my clients and barely touch my old foiling. It stings a little admitting the internet taught me better than my cosmetology school did.

Wait so do you still do traditional foils for certain hair types or textures? Like if someone has really thick coarse hair does that melt method still work as well or do you have to adjust it? I've been wondering about this because I have a few clients who swear by their foils and I'm scared to mess with their look but also wanna try something fresher. Also did you have to buy totally different brushes or products for the new technique or could you just adapt what you already had?
