Showerthought: My garage floor kept coming out patchy, and it was driving me up the wall.

Tried everything from different trowels to more passes, but nothing worked. Finally talked to an old timer who said I was hitting it too soon after the pour. Now I wait for the surface to lose its wet look before I start, and the finishes are smooth. That fix cleared up the issue.

Wait, is that really the whole fix? @craig.reese has a point, it seems way too simple to be the answer for such a messy problem.

Yeah, "just wait longer" makes it sound like nothing, but it's actually the whole key. That wet look means the water and fines are still on top. If you work it then, you're just pushing that slurry around and it sets up all wrong. Waiting for it to dull lets the bleed water evaporate so you're working with the actual concrete. It's a timing thing that changes everything.

So the old timer's big fix was just to wait longer?
