Why does every beginner tutorial use the same boring to-do list app?

I was browsing freeCodeCamp yesterday and counted 8 tutorials all building the same to-do list. It's lazy teaching that doesn't teach real problem solving. Has anyone found a course that uses projects like a calculator or a budget tracker instead?

Wait, @wyatta30 your friend spent two whole weekends doing to-do list tutorials and that's it? That's nuts. I feel like that's the coding version of going to cooking school just to learn how to make toast.

You ever have a buddy who tried learning to code? My friend Mike spent two weekends on to-do list tutorials. Now his house is the only place with a digital chore list but he still can't build anything useful.
