Tried both points and electronic ignition on my '65 Mustang this weekend
Honestly, I spent all Saturday swapping between a Pertronix kit and the old points setup on my 289, and the electronic ignition just ran smoother. The points kept needing gaps checked after every 50 miles, while the Pertronix fired up cold and idled steady without touching it. Has anyone else found a reliable way to make points work long term, or is electronic the only way to go?

Electronic ignition just ran smoother" - until it leaves you stranded on a back road with a dead module you can't fix with a matchbook. I've had points in my '68 for years, never had one fail outright on me. Just carry a spare condenser and a feeler gauge in the glovebox, takes ten minutes to swap.

Ain't that the truth though? I used to be all about electronic ignition, thought points were some ancient relic. But last summer my buddy's '77 Chevy got stranded on a logging road with a fried module, and I had to tow him 15 miles. Meanwhile my old '66 Ford with points fired right up after I just wiped the contacts clean on the side of the road. That one experience kinda made me see things different. Now I keep a spare set of points and a file in the glovebox, and I'm not going back.
