That job in a 1920s bungalow with the slanted floors

Last month I had to put carpet in this old house in the historic district. The floors were so off level, like a full inch drop over 10 feet. The owner wanted wall to wall in the living room and didn't want to pay for a subfloor fix. I spent half a day just trying to get the tack strip right on the worst wall, using shims and extra nails. When I finally got to the stretch, it felt like wrestling a bear uphill. The carpet kept wanting to pull away from the baseboard on the high side. I ended up using a power stretcher on a way tighter setting than normal just to get it to hold. Has anyone else had to deal with a floor that bad and found a better way to handle it?

That inch drop sounds pretty standard for a century old house. You just have to work the tack strip and use a lot of adhesive on the pad seams. It's not a big deal if you prep for it.
