Pro tip: I switched from a regular utility knife to a hook blade for cutting carpet in place about a year ago and it changed my speed completely.
I used to just use a standard snap-off blade for everything, even trimming carpet against a wall after the stretch. It worked, but I'd go through a ton of blades on a big job and sometimes the tip would catch on the backing. Then I saw a guy at a supply house in Tacoma using a hook blade. He said it was like a hot knife through butter for final cuts. I bought a pack for maybe $12 and tried it on my next job, a 20x15 living room. The difference was huge. The hook shape lets you pull through the carpet without digging into the pad or the floor underneath. I don't have to change the blade nearly as often, and my cuts are way cleaner along baseboards. Has anyone else made a small tool switch like that which saved them a bunch of time or hassle?

Yeah, the hook blade is a total game changer for that final trim. I keep one in my pouch just for baseboard cuts now.

Totally get that. Felt like a hack the first time I tried one on baseboards. No more awkward angles or messing up the finish. That little hook just slides right in where a regular blade can't. Honestly changed how I do all my trim work now.
