Bought a $15 portable clothesline for hostels. Regretted it instantly.

I figured it'd be a genius hack for drying socks in shared dorms. But the suction cups failed on the first damp wall and it crashed onto someone's bunk at 2 AM. Who else has bought a 'budget travel essential' that just made things worse?

Hold on a second. I think you might be getting suction cups and those cheap little sticky hooks mixed up. Suction cups actually work better on smooth, non-porous surfaces like tile or glass, not on painted hostel walls which are usually a little textured or damp. The real problem is that $15 clothesline is almost certainly made of that thin plastic cord that stretches out and sags the minute you hang a wet t-shirt on it. You'd have been better off just buying a couple of those tiny binder clips and a length of paracord from the hardware store.
