My sister told me to buy a big bag of rice and a sack of beans

She said it was the cheapest way to eat, so I got a 20 pound bag of rice and 5 pounds of black beans for about $15 total. For a week I just ate plain rice and beans and got so bored I almost gave up. Then I looked up recipes and learned to add cheap stuff like onions, garlic, and a can of tomatoes. Now I make a big pot that feeds me for days and costs almost nothing. What other cheap things do you add to rice and beans to keep it from getting old?

Honestly, eating plain rice and beans for a week sounds like a special kind of punishment. Good on you for figuring out the spice and veggie trick, that's the only way to survive. A little cumin or chili powder can make a huge difference for almost no cost. Sometimes I'll throw in a chopped up carrot or some frozen corn if I have it. It's crazy how a single onion can save you from total food boredom.

Plain rice and beans is fine, it's food. People act like every meal needs to be a party. Onions and spices cost money too, that adds up. The whole point is to save cash, not make it fancy. Just eat the plain stuff and be happy you're not hungry.
