Update: I always brushed off our book club's fights about mother-daughter relationships in novels, but yesterday's chat on 'Where the Crawdads Sing' turned me around.

Seeing how everyone's own family stuff colored their reading of Kya's isolation made it clear these debates actually matter.

So your book club's real hobby is using novels to politely psychoanalyze each other's parents, right? One meeting you're talking about fictional isolation, the next you're basically in group therapy.

Damn, you caught us red-handed lol. Set a hard rule that parent talk gets exactly five minutes before someone has to mention the actual book's symbolism. I literally once said "cool trauma, but how about that green light metaphor?" Sounds harsh but it saves the meeting. Otherwise you're just paying for wine while listening to childhood issues.

Sounds like we're all just paying for group therapy with extra steps.
