That book club debate about unreliable narrators that almost split our group in half

Last month our book club read "The Girls" and I swear we spent two whole hours arguing about whether the main character was lying about what happened or if she was just naive. It got so heated that Margaret literally stood up and said "if you think she's a reliable witness then you missed the whole point of the book." Things got quiet after that. I ended up staying up until 2 AM that night googling different takes on unreliable narrators and wrote a whole three page analysis (which nobody asked for, honestly). What made it stand out was how personal everyone got about it - like people were projecting their own experiences onto the character's choices. Has anyone else had a book club argument get way more intense than you expected over a character's honesty or memory?
