Serious question, what happens when a book club debate becomes a geography lesson?
Last Tuesday, our book club discussed a fantasy book with detailed worlds. Sarah argued the travel times were off compared to the map. She grabbed napkins and sketched her own map to prove it. Mike disagreed and showed fan drawn maps on his phone. Then, half the group debated scales while others just watched. We all ended up laughing at how absurd it was. Now I'm curious if other clubs have similar silly debates.

Actually, saying the author needed a better cartographer misses the fun part. When people get that into debating maps, it means the world felt real enough to care about. Those silly tangents are my favorite part of book club.

What book caused all the map drama? Sounds like the author needed a better cartographer.

Honestly, bad maps are more than just cartography errors. They point to bigger story problems. Like when travel times don't match the map scale, it makes the whole plot feel rushed. That's not fun to debate, it's just sloppy.
