Serious question, did anyone actually finish that 800 page book our club picked?
Our group voted between a short story collection and a huge historical novel, and I argued hard for the short stories because I knew half of us wouldn't finish the long one. We picked the novel anyway, and now only three people showed up to the meeting to talk about it. Has your club ever recovered from a pick that was just too much book?

Maybe try a graphic novel next time.

My last graphic novel was a Garfield collection in 1994, so you're probably right.

Garfield in 1994 is a serious time jump. The whole medium has changed so much since then. You could try something like "Maus" for a heavy true story or "Saga" for a wild space opera. There's way more out there than just superheroes now. Honestly, it's a great time to jump back in.
