Finally picked a book for my club after a 30 minute debate

I was stuck between a gritty memoir and a light romance for our next read... my group leans serious but we needed a break. Ended up going with the memoir because it had local setting in Portland and it got everyone talking for 45 minutes. The romance would've been easier but the deep discussion was worth it. Has anyone else had a book choice that surprised your whole group?

Used to roll my eyes at people who fought that hard over a book pick. Thought it was just indecisive nonsense. But after my group spent an hour arguing between a true crime book and a cozy mystery set in our city, I get it now. The debate itself ended up being more fun than reading either book would have been. Getting everyone invested in the choice made the actual discussion way better when we finally settled on the crime one.
