Book club pick bombed because we voted for the trendiest title

Last month our 14 person group in Portland chose a hyped literary novel over a quieter memoir, and 9 of us hated it by page 100. The discussion was a mess because everyone had different grips, so we are debating if we should stick with popular picks or just rotate who chooses blindly. Has anyone else had a vote backfire this bad, or do we need a new voting rule?
