Vent: My crew chief swears by a 10-degree bevel for thick plate, but I found 15 degrees works way faster.

We were welding up a 2-inch thick pressure vessel section in Houston, and the standard prep was taking forever. I tried opening the bevel to 15 degrees on one joint, just to see, and it cut our fill time down by almost an hour. Does anyone else adjust their bevel angles based on thickness, or is that asking for trouble with the X-ray?

Honestly, I heard a guy say a wider bevel can pass X-ray if your heat input is right.

I mean, that sounds like shop talk from someone who's been lucky so far. I've seen guys try to cheat the specs and it always catches up to them during the real test. Maybe it's just me but I wouldn't risk it.
