Showerthought: I just realized I've welded over 10,000 feet of 2-inch schedule 80 pipe in my career, which is almost two miles of seam.
It hit me after finishing a big run for a new boiler install at the Pasadena plant last month, and now I'm curious if anyone else has ever stopped to calculate their total 'mileage' on a specific material or joint type.

Man, that's a cool way to look at it. I did the same thing with 3-inch carbon steel a few years back. Tallying up all the spools and field welds on a refinery job, it came out to over three miles. Makes you realize the sheer scale of the work we do without even thinking about it.

That's a fair point from the_miles about the scale, but honestly, those big numbers just make me think about all the rework. Seen too many miles of pipe get cut out because someone rushed the fit-up or the specs changed last minute. The real skill isn't in the length of the weld, it's in making sure none of it has to be done twice.
