Am I the only one tired of hearing 'back in my day' on every job site?
I overheard a 60 year old fitter telling a green apprentice that 6010 rods were the only thing worth running, and that inverters were a crutch. I've been in boilers for 15 years and the old tech has its place, but why not teach the kid how to actually set a modern machine instead of making him fight a tombstone? Anyone else deal with foremen who refuse to touch anything made after 1995?

You ever try just telling the old guy straight up "hey let me run the next one and show the kid what I do?" I had a similar situation with a foreman who swore by old Miller stuff. I didn't argue with him about the past, I just said "let me burn a few rods on this new machine and you watch." After he saw me hold a consistent arc and get better penetration on thin metal he backed off a little. Sometimes you gotta earn the right to teach by showing you can actually run their way first. The kid will figure out which way works better once he sees both.

Did he actually try your way after that, or just act impressed but not change?
