I finally got a clean weld on that old anvil stand by using a piece of copper pipe as a backer.
Tried it after three failed attempts with regular steel. Anyone have a better trick for filling gaps in thick plate?

Right? It's not like they're trying to disarm a bomb. What's the worst that could happen, a wobbly table? Just give it a good shove and call it a day.
