Shoutout to the bike shop in Austin that actually let me shadow them for a day
I walked into The Peddler on South Congress last month and asked if I could watch their mechanic work on a few builds. The guy named Mike didn't even blink, just handed me a rag and said "grab a stool." I watched him true a wheel in under 10 minutes using only a spoke wrench and his ear - no truing stand needed. Then he showed me how he sets up cable housing length so shifts are perfect every time, no guesswork. Has anyone else found a shop that lets you learn on the job like that or was I just lucky?

My first attempt at truing a wheel I ended up making it worse somehow, like the tire was trying to escape the rim. So mad respect to Mike for pulling that off by ear. That cable housing thing is a total game changer too, I always just eyeball it and then spend ten minutes fighting with the barrel adjuster later. Sounds like you found a real gem of a shop and a mechanic who actually likes teaching people.

Wait, you can true a wheel just by listening to it? I used to think that kind of thing was just mechanic bravado, like people who say they can feel a flat spot by riding blindfolded. But watching a guy actually do it in under ten minutes with no tools except a spoke wrench totally changed my mind about what's possible with enough practice.
