I was reading a 1992 shop manual and the torque spec for a quill stem was way lower than I thought

It was an old Raleigh book I picked up at a garage sale for a dollar, and it said 15 foot-pounds max for a 1-inch threaded stem. I've been cranking those things down for years thinking they needed more. Has anyone else come across an old spec that made you rethink a standard practice?

Just realized I've probably been over-tightening stems for a decade. I used to put my whole weight on that wrench until it felt "right." How many quills have I crushed? How many old steel forks are now secretly oval? Makes you wonder what else we're all doing wrong because no one reads the old manuals.

That's a real eye opener, and honestly, it makes perfect sense. We all just sort of learn by feel and pass along what seems right. I've definitely put a scary amount of force on an old stem before, thinking it needed to be absolutely solid. Finding those old specs is like a little time capsule correcting our bad habits. Makes me want to dig out my own old manuals and see what else I've been getting wrong all these years.
