Found a shop in Portland that still does frame repairs by hand

Went to Bilenky Cycle Works last week. They were brazing a cracked seatstay on a 90s touring bike. No jig, just torch and brass. Anyone else seen places that still work frames like that?

Oh man, technically brazing uses a torch and brass is called brazing not welding, but I get what you mean!

Wait, Bilenky still has their original torch setup from the 80s? I remember reading a blog post about them a few years back where they said they keep the old silver brazing gear around for certain repairs. There's a shop in Tucson called Fairing Cycles that does something similar but they use a different filler rod for aluminum. I think the real trick with hand brazing is the timing you gotta get the heat just right or you'll warp the whole dropout. Funny how that old school skill is almost lost now with all the tig welding robots and production frames.
