My offset smoker door seal gave out mid-cook on a brisket last Saturday
I was 6 hours into a 14-pound brisket for a family cookout when I noticed the temp was dropping like crazy. Turned out the felt gasket around my firebox door had peeled off in a big chunk, letting all the heat escape. I panicked for a minute, then grabbed some high-temp RTV silicone I had lying around and just smeared it along the gap to patch it up. It held well enough to finish the cook, but the brisket took an extra 2 hours and came out a bit drier than usual. The whole thing made me realize I should probably replace those gaskets every season instead of waiting for them to fail. Has anyone else had a seal go bad right in the middle of a long smoke? What did you do to fix it on the spot?
