My old boss told me to never use thinning shears on dry hair, but I tried it anyway

He was a barber in Chicago for 30 years and said it would make the cut look choppy. I had a client with thick, wavy hair last week and thought I could speed things up by thinning it dry. The result was a patchy mess that took me an extra 20 minutes to fix with my clippers. Has anyone else found a good technique for thinning dense hair without making it look uneven?

Honestly, that point about removing weight not density is key. Tbh I've seen people use thinning shears like a texture tool on dry ends after the cut is set. Like on really bulky ends of a bob, just taking a few snips on already dried hair to soften the line without changing the shape. But you have to be so careful, it's easy to overdo it and get those holes.

My barber school instructor in Florida always said thinning shears are for removing weight, not density. He insisted you have to see the hair's natural fall when it's wet to do that right. Trying to cheat that step just creates more work.

My old boss used to say the same thing about wet hair, lol. He'd get so mad if someone grabbed thinning shears on dry hair first. It really does save time to just follow the natural flow from the start.
