That rain gutter shortcut cost me 4 extra miles near Shenandoah

I was planning a loop on the AT and marked a connector on my map that looked like a solid trail. Turned out it was a dried up rain gutter that just stopped at a cliff edge. I kept thinking I was a quarter mile off, but I walked up and down that same stretch for over an hour before I pulled out my phone and re-routed. Took me 4 extra miles and a soaked pair of socks to finally accept the map was lying. Has anyone else followed a so-called trail that turned out to be a utility access road or something worse? How do you vet those unmarked connectors before you commit?
