Planning a route used to mean stopping at every gas station for local advice
I was looking at my old trail journals and remembered how we'd piece together info from folks we met. Now you can download a full map with water sources marked before you even leave home. It's way easier, but I kind of miss those chance conversations that led to secret spots. The trails are the same, but how we find them feels totally different.

I always thought that was just how it was done, but honestly I really miss those weird little talks.

Man, I get that completely. Those random off-topic chats always made things feel more human. I didn't realize how much I counted on them until they were gone, just that quick joke while waiting for a file to load. Now everything is so straight to business, and you notice the silence.

Totally get that. I made a point to chat up other hikers at trailheads last time I went out. Ended up finding a cool waterfall nobody had on the map, lmao.
