Vent: realized I've been seasoning cast iron wrong for a decade after my cousin in Austin showed me her pan
I always did the whole oven method with flaxseed oil but her pan was like glass and she just uses bacon grease on the stove top every time, which side is actually right or does it just depend on what you're cooking?

I mean unless you're cooking eggs or cornbread every single day it probably doesn't matter that much. Flaxseed oil works fine for most people, bacon grease is just faster and smells better. Your food isn't gonna taste different either way. At the end of the day it's a hunk of iron not a science experiment.

Bacon grease smokes at a lower temp than most oils, so you're actually polymerizing that seasoning layer way slower if you're not careful. That's kind of the hidden killer nobody talks about.
