Can we talk about how library reference desks have changed?
I was at the main branch of the Seattle Public Library last week and went to ask a question at the reference desk. The librarian didn't pull out a single book. She just turned to her computer, typed for a minute, and showed me a digital archive from a university 2,000 miles away. It got me thinking about when I was a kid in the 90s and the same process meant waiting while they checked the card catalog and then physical shelves. The answer came faster, but it felt less like a search. Has anyone else noticed this shift in how we find information, even in places built for it?

Totally get what you mean. The speed is unreal now, but it does feel like the hunt is gone. Used to love watching librarians work the old system, pulling threads until they found the answer. Now it's just a Google search with a better guide. You get what you need faster, but you lose that sense of a shared physical mission. Kinda miss the sound of the card catalog drawers slamming shut.
