Rant: I was cutting all my climbing line splices way too short for years until a guy in Portland pointed it out.

He asked me how I got my bury so clean on a short tail, and I realized my standard 21-inch bury on half-inch line was actually leaving me with only about 3 inches of tail, which is just asking for trouble, right?

Whoa, that's way too short. Three inches of tail on a half-inch line? That's basically nothing. The rule is a fist plus a handspan, so you're looking at like 10-12 inches minimum. I've seen tails that short just start to creep out under load, and then you're in a real bad spot.

Creep out under load" is exactly the nightmare scenario lol. Better safe than sorry with that extra length.
