Hot take: I was wrong about used parts being a waste of time

I used to swear off used parts for washer repairs. Thought it was just asking for a callback in a few months. But then I was fixing a 10 year old Samsung washer for a lady in Oak Park and the original control board was over $200 new. She was about to throw the whole machine out. I found a guy on Facebook who parts out appliances and he had a board for $40. I figured what the heck, I'll try it. Popped it in and that washer has been running fine for 8 months now. That one interaction made me realize I was being stubborn about something that actually works. Has anyone else had good luck with used parts on older machines?

My first time was with a Whirlpool dryer that had a bad motor. The new one was gonna cost me almost as much as the dryer was worth. I found a guy on OfferUp who was basically a hoarder with a garage full of appliance parts and he sold me one for 30 bucks. It was a little rusty on the outside but it fired right up and that dryer is still going strong two years later. Now I check used parts first before even looking at new ones for anything over 5 years old.

Ngl the environmental angle is what really sold me on used parts. Throwing away a whole washing machine over a $40 board is insane when you think about all the metal and plastic that goes into a landfill.
