Figured out after 15 years I was laying tile wrong

My cousin came over to help with my kitchen backsplash last month and watched me butter the backs of every tile. He stopped me and said 'you know you just have to key the mortar into the wall, right?' I had been doing full coverage on every single tile for a decade and a half because my first boss showed me that way. Now my arms dont hurt as bad and I go through half the thinset. Anyone else have a basic skill they learned backwards like that?
