My old art teacher used to show us how to make prints from ink on glass. You get way more control over the shape than with random spills.

Try using food coloring drops in a shallow dish of milk, it makes these wild, swirling patterns that are way more interesting than coffee rings. I got some cool shots of that on my phone last week. Ink in water is another good one, just a single drop from an eyedropper. The key is using a plain white background so the colors really pop. My kid and I spent a whole afternoon doing this after the coffee stain letdown.

Remember my one attempt at the milk and food coloring thing. I was going for those cool swirls but ended up with a dish that looked like a sad, muddy puddle. My artistic talent peaks at cleaning driveways, not making pretty patterns. The kid would have fired me on the spot.
