I used to roll my eyes at people who said rust on a car can look beautiful until I saw an old Ford pickup in the Arizona desert last spring, the entire hood was a perfect pattern of orange brown and black spots.

What sold me was how the rust had spread in these perfect concentric circles from three separate spots, like a watercolor painting done by wind and time, has anyone else been converted by something they thought was just damage?

Rust on a Ford hood sounds legit. Did that pattern look like it was mostly caused by rocks or salt eating through the clear coat, or was it more of a factory paint flaw that just went wild?

Wait @wyatt862, did you ever see that article about desert pitting where sandblasting mixed with humidity creates those ring patterns because the clear coat fails in stages? That Ford hood sounds like textbook case of silica erosion acting like a natural paint stripper.
