Hot take: I thought those old 'under construction' gifs were just lazy filler
Honestly, for years I saw them on every other page and thought it was just a cheap way to hide unfinished work. Then I found a personal site from 1996 that was basically a digital diary, and it had one of those animated yellow signs. The guy updated it every single week, talking about what he was adding next. It showed the web was alive and being built by hand, not some static product. Anyone else have a site where those gifs actually meant something?

Wayback Machine still has my old site with a dancing banana gif underneath "under construction".
