Found a forgotten Geocities site with a working guestbook from 1998

I was digging through old bookmarks on a hard drive I kept from my college years, and I found a link to a Geocities page about homemade optical illusions. The site still loads, even has the neon green text on black background. The guestbook at the bottom actually worked, and I left a message saying hello from 2025. It was wild scrolling through old entries from strangers talking about getting their first dial-up modems and sharing tips on making animated GIFs. Forgot how bare bones and creative those pages were, no ads or popups, just pure weird passion projects. Has anyone else stumbled onto a site from that era that's still kicking around?

just pure weird passion projects" hit the nail on the head. Those sites were raw creativity with no metric chasing. If you want to keep that guestbook alive, take a screenshot or save the page as a PDF right now. Those old servers are held together with duct tape and prayers. I've seen people lose entire archives because they assumed the site would stay up forever. Also check if the guestbook script is running on some ancient Perl backend - those are ticking time bombs.

I read somewhere that a bunch of those old GeoCities archives got lost when Yahoo just pulled the plug one day. People had their entire teenage years saved in those guestbooks and they just vanished. You're right about the Perl backends too. I heard about a guy who ran a fansite for like ten years and the whole thing crashed when his host updated the server and broke the old script. It's wild how much history is sitting on a single server somewhere running on pure stubbornness and luck.
