Remember when every house in Mill Woods seemed to have that same beige laminate floor?

Back in 2010, I'd just slap down that click-lock laminate over the old floor, but now, after seeing how much moisture can get trapped in our winters, I always put down a proper 6 mil poly vapor barrier first, even if it adds a day to the job.

Just finished a deck job with two different framing methods

We built a big deck in Bellingham last month. Half we framed with standard 2x8 joists, 16 on center. The other half we used a new engineered I-joist system. The difference in bounce and flatness after a year is huge. The I-joist side is still rock solid. Anyone else made that switch and seen the same thing?

Client's gray hair just won't take the color. Any tricks?

Tell me about it, my own gray hairs are so stubborn I swear they're judging me. I've had luck using a 10 volume developer for a longer processing time on those resistant patches, it's less harsh but needs patience. A clear protein filler works wonders too, it plumps up the hair so the color has something to stick to. Makes a huge difference without frying everything.

Showerthought: I've been crimping my RJ31X jacks wrong for ten years.

Yeah exactly, the cheap crimper just smashes everything into a sad little metal pancake... it's brutal. The good one I borrowed had a two-step thing, first it folded the metal flap down neatly over the wire, then a second press closed it tight without wrecking the plastic. The pattern was different too, like the teeth that did the crimping were shaped to match the connector, not just a flat surface. Total game changer for getting those wires to actually stay put.
