Appreciation post: Finally got a client to pay a 50% deposit upfront

I kept getting ghosted after sending quotes, so I started using a simple contract from Bonsai that requires half the project fee before I even open a file. My first client with this new rule just sent over $750 for a website redesign, no questions asked. It feels like a huge weight off my shoulders knowing the project is already half paid for. Anyone else have luck with specific contract tools or payment terms that actually stick?

Honestly, that approach would tank my business. I work with a lot of small local shops and non-profits. Asking for half up front, before any trust is built, would scare off every single one of them. My system is a small deposit to book the date, then the full balance is due after they approve the final design. That feels fair for both of us. Getting that big chunk upfront feels like putting the cart before the horse.

Totally get that. I used to worry about scaring clients off too. I found a clear contract with simple milestones built enough trust to ask for 50% to start. It actually cut down on the tire kickers.
