Our shop in Toledo stopped pre-heating molds for our gray iron jobs under 50 pounds

The old foreman always said you HAD to pre-heat to avoid cold shuts, but we tried skipping it on a batch of small gear blanks. After six months, the scrap rate is actually LOWER because we're not getting as much sand burn-on from the extra heat. Has anyone else run into this with smaller pours?

Our foreman in Dayton said the same thing, actually.

Guess the old foreman was wrong about that one.
