Found a weird little metal box in a Seattle alley last Tuesday

It was about the size of a deck of cards, had no markings, and was locked shut with a tiny padlock. I took it home and spent an hour carefully prying it open with a flathead screwdriver. Inside was just a single, slightly rusted key and a folded piece of paper with the number '17' written on it. What do you think the most boring possible story behind this thing is?

Okay, "weird little metal box" just makes me think of those escape room puzzle kits people buy as gag gifts. Someone probably got it for their birthday, thought it was dumb, and chucked it. The key opens a locker at a bus station that closed down three years ago, and the paper is just the locker number. The most boring story is that it's literal trash from a failed prank.

Look at christopher867 over here solving the whole mystery. It's a rusty box and a random key, not a spy movie. People throw out junk all the time. My cousin found an old lunchbox full of bottle caps last week. Sometimes a weird find is just that, weird. Not everything has a big story behind it.
