Why does nobody talk about the 2005 forum thread where a guy tried to fix his car with a potato?
I mean, I dug it up last night and the whole thing is just 12 pages of people arguing about starch content and one guy from Boise who actually got his '92 Civic to start for like, three days, which honestly makes me wonder what other weird fixes are buried out there.

My uncle once used a soda can tab to replace a broken belt loop on his lawnmower and it lasted two whole summers. The internet is full of these weird little victories that get lost because they're too specific to search for. I bet there's a whole subculture of people fixing things with whatever's in their kitchen junk drawer. It makes you wonder how many working appliances right now are held together with old gum and hope.

But what happens when that gum and hope finally gives out? I mean, is there a point where a clever fix becomes a safety problem, or do we just trust that the person who rigged it up knows its limits? It's like we're all living with these secret time bombs of ingenuity.
