Can we talk about that $60 I lost on bad burlap sacks for sauerkraut?
I thought I was being smart buying cheap burlap sacks off a random website for my cabbage ferments. First batch, the fabric started shedding fibers into my kraut after just 5 days. I lost about 60 bucks, a whole head of cabbage, and a week of waiting. Anyone else run into fake or low grade burlap that ruins a batch?
You know, I USED to think cheap burlap was fine since it's just a natural material. But after one batch got tiny brown fibers floating in the brine like gross confetti, I totally changed my mind. Those cheap sacks often aren't washed properly or use loose weave that sheds like crazy. Now I only buy from actual fermentation supply sites or wash the burlap first in hot water to see if it falls apart.
Hear you out, but Iāve had good luck with cheap burlap after giving it a hot vinegar soak and scrub to knock out loose fibers. Did you try washing yours before using it?
