TIL from a old timer at the supply yard that I've been digging my post holes way too deep for years
He said 3 feet for a 6 foot fence is overkill in most soil and now I'm cutting my dig time almost in half, has anyone else been overdoing it on depth?

Digging yourself into a hole, literally, for years has got to sting a little.

3 feet in most soil is overkill but not in loose sand or really wet clay where frost heave gets bad. You could be saving time now and losing fence posts in a year. Better safe than redoing it.
