Managed to calm a spooky pony for a perfect trim session

I've been working with this one pony that always gets twitchy during hoof care. It made the job take forever and was pretty stressful for both of us. So, I started paying close attention to what set it off, like sudden moves or loud noises. Turns out, if I let it sniff my tools first (and I mean really get a good whiff) and talk in a low voice, it chills out right away. Today, I did that from the start, and we finished the trim in half the time. The owner was thrilled, and I felt like I really connected with the animal. Sometimes, it's the little things that make all the difference, you know?

I mean, does letting it sniff tools really fix the fear, or just cover it up?

Actually works if you pair the smell with something good. Give treats while the tools are out so the dog starts to link them with food. Do that for a few days before you even try to use the tool. It's not a cover up, it changes how they feel about the noise later.

Wait, you let it smell your tools first?
