My old boss told me to never trust a 'no power' diagnosis without checking the fuse first...
I thought it was basic stuff, but last week a guy brought in a dead amp and three shops told him the board was fried. Checked the fuse, it was just a blown 3A. Saved him like $200. Anyone else run into shops that skip the simple stuff?

Nah, I gotta push back on this a little. Honestly, its not always about a shop skipping steps. Sometimes a bad fuse is a symptom, not the fix. Ive seen plenty of times where you swap that fuse, the thing fires up, but a week later its back with a blown fuse again because theres a short somewhere you missed. Shops that swap whole boards are usually trying to cover their ass or theyve seen that board fail so many times that jumping straight to the repair is actually the smarter move for the customer long term. Tbh, if three different shops all told that guy the board was fried, odds are good there was more going on than just a blown fuse. Glad it worked out for him this time but that kind of luck doesnt hold up for everyone.

Saw a tech at a local shop swap a whole power supply on a monitor. The 50 cent fuse on the daughter board was the real problem. It's like some places have a checklist but start at step five.

Classic. I've definitely been that tech before, swapping the whole board when the fix was right there. Sometimes you just get stuck on the wrong step.
