Honestly @the_troy has a point that you can train without gear, but skipping the basics is just dumb. Watched a guy at my gym try heavy squats in running shoes, his knees were wobbling all over the place. That's a one way ticket to pain. A decent pair of shoes or some knee sleeves isn't about being fancy, it's about not being broken at forty. Protect the joints you've got.
