Mentioned river flow data to a hydrologist last week and got schooled

I was complaining about how much silt we were pulling up on the Mississippi and he asked if I'd checked the 30-day average discharge. Turns out I was running way too deep for those conditions. Has anyone else had a hydrologist or engineer call out something in your daily ops that completely changed how you run?

30 day average discharge? That's wild, I've never even thought to look at that metric. I mean, I just check the daily gauge height and call it good (which sounds real stupid now). You basically got a free lesson in why my dragline was digging up more mud than rock last month.

@wyatt_chen86 that reminds me of a time a geologist told me my anchor was stirring up a buried pipeline.
