Debate: Should drafters drop hand drafting completely?

My CAD instructor said hand drafting is dead and we should focus 100% on software. But I landed a job at a small firm last month and the senior drafter there only uses a drafting board for initial layouts. Which side is more common out there?

Ha! I used to be totally on your instructor's side honestly. I thought hand drafting was just some old school nostalgia thing until I started working with a senior guy who sketches everything on a board first. Seeing how fast he can work out spacing issues and proportions with just a pencil made me realize there's something to it. It's not about dropping software, it's about having that extra tool in your pocket (especially for quick problem solving before you commit to CAD).

Quick problem solving before you commit" - same reason I still use a paper grocery list.
