My uncle swore by using a 2-inch paintbrush for cutting in trim, but after 3 rooms of messy edges I switched to a 1-inch angled brush and the lines are finally sharp.

Has anyone else found that 'expert' advice from a relative just doesn't work with your own hands?

Ever notice how some tools just feel wrong in your hand? I had the same thing with brushes, and like @reese_lane29 said, you have to find what works for your own grip and pace. The right tool makes all the difference.

My dad insisted on a 4-inch roller for walls, but it just flung paint everywhere. I had to find my own method with a smaller roller that felt right. Sometimes you just have to ignore the family tips and figure out what works for you.
