My neighbor told me to stop using wood filler on my deck boards

I was fixing a few soft spots on my back deck last weekend, and my neighbor Jim came over to chat. He pointed at my can of wood filler and said, 'You know, that stuff just traps moisture and makes it rot faster from the inside.' He showed me how he cuts out the bad section and grafts in a new piece of pressure-treated wood instead. It made me stop and think about all the quick fixes I've done that might cause bigger problems later. How do you guys handle small repairs on outdoor wood without making it worse?
