Why does nobody talk about how Facebook Ads can steal your budget with bad targeting

Had a client last week in Portland who runs a small bakery. She gave me access to her account and I saw she was targeting "people interested in bread" plus like 15 other interests. She spent $1,200 in 3 days with zero sales. I asked her who set it up and she said some guy from Fiverr who promised quick results. The targeting was so broad it was showing her ads to people in Nebraska and Florida. Her bakery is a local spot that doesnt even ship. I had to rebuild everything from scratch with a 5 mile radius and only foodie related interests. She almost cried when I showed her the wasted budget. Has anyone else had to fix a mess like this from cheap freelancers?

Whoa hold on, that Fiverr guy should be banned from touching ad accounts. What I really want to know is did you check if her audience network was on too? I've seen way too many freelancers leave that setting turned on and it eats budget showing ads in random apps to people who don't care. The bakery lady got hit with the double whammy of bad geo targeting and probably showing up in some mobile game instead of Facebook.
